I found this article on ESPN.
Being a Florida Gator fan I was watching the Florida-Georgia game. When I noticed that a Florida player was poking a Georgia player in the eye over and over again. No flag was thrown even though it was obviously a penalty.
The video was later reviewed and it showed Brandon Spikes eye gouging Washaun Ealey multiple times. Brandon Spikes got a slap on the wrist and is only suspended for the first half of the Vanderbilt game.
I think that this is absolutely unacceptable. I know that tensions are high being a rivalry game, but eye gouging? The worst part is he only got suspended for the half of one game.
How do you feel about Brandon Spikes unsportsmanlike play?

I think thats just dumb. Why would you risk a penalty just to poke someone in the eye, but it is football and the players would rather risk being hit in the eyes than wear more lacrosse or hockey helmets. Also i do know that many linemen have visors just because they get hit in the eyes all the time.

This happens all the time. They just don't get it on camera. It is kinda like that "fight" between Manny and Youk two seasons ago on the Red Sox.
Ask any lineman. This happens all the time maybe just not this bad.

Thats assault, i would consider pressing charges if it happened to me. If he messed up my eye and lose some of my vision i would have no problem taking him to court.

ok as an offensive lineman and just a football player i see nothing wrong with the act of trying to gouge. i only see the wrongness in the severity spikes took it to. this happens all the time in piles and usually eye gouging is the nice thing that happens. just earlier this year a d-lineman shoved his fingers down my facemask and gave my nose a nice scrape. the game of football is tough and dirty at times.

I know I will probably take some fire for saying this...
but if he wasn't playing for one of the top teams in the nation he would have received a much more severe punishment.

It happens, but the fact that they got it on camera and still only suspended him for a half is not cool. Blount from Oregon punched a guy who may or may not have deserved it, and got a whole season taken.

The punishment was issued by his coach. To my knowledge, there has been no NCAA ruling or involvement at this point.

It's football....worse stuff happens in piles. He just got caught, and his coach punished him just to save face.

well, if thats the Case, and I was the Coach, he would be out for 3 games minimum and on the scout team the whole time in practice, I don't care how good you are.
but I'm not an NCAA national Champion coach,he is, so he knows how to handle his team.

After seeing the video, you don't literally see him stick his fingers in his eyes, which I'm glad I didn't see that because to me that is absolutely disgusting. But it reminds me of in the movie Never Back Down, when the blonde guy eye gouges the crap out of the other guy in the fight. I don't have to turn my head away from most things, but that kind of thing I just can't bear to watch. Hope the other player is alright.

I would have suspended him for the entire Vandy game. It's not like they need him.

its the florida gators, what did you guys expect?
i distinctly remember last year 2 days before the LSU game on of the players broke into an impound lot at 5:00 in the morning to steal his girlfriends car. guess what happend- NOTHING they played it off as if he just was supposed to meet the owner of he lot there at that time, and just walked right in.
at LSU our QB ryan paralleaux was kicked off the team for a scuffle at a bar
some of urban meyers actions i just dont agree with

What are you talking about. Im all for the fun but since when was getting eye gouged fun? Id be ok with broken bones and that kind of stuff because it heals. But once your eyes are messed up it can be forever. Not to mention i need them for the rest of my life to see.

This punishment is a joke. Admittedly, I go to Alabama and hate Florida but come on, this is laughable. A half against the SEC's worst team? For trying to blind someone? Bush League

stop over reacting this happens all the time and hes only getting punished because they got it on camera, im sure it happened at lewast 5 other times during the game. I dont agreew tiht he punishment however since it has gotten so much attention and since its such a big time school he should of at least gotten suspended for the game not just one half.

I feel for you who think this is ok because you think 'it happens all the time.' This was not in a pile up fighting for a loose ball (which it still does not happen very often).
Spikes was going after a specific player and assaulted him on the field at a time he thought he would not be seen. He deserves to be suspended for the rest of the season.
That gouge was far worse than Blount's punch.

I played throughout high school. I was never gouged in the eye nor did I ever hear of a teammate of mine being gouged in the eye. The bottom of piles have all kinds of grabbing, pulling, pushing going on - including some face mask yanking, but never was I gouged in the eye.
That is a completely dirty move and deserves to be punished. That said, whether or not it happened all the time does not excuse it.

You can tell by how quickly the second player backed off that it was an accident.
Also most players that have dreads have a tough time keeping their helmets from coming off easily, Spikes had troubles with it all game and seems to have had problems with it for the past two years.

Ya I agree with Kevin that one looked accidental and it wasn't like Spike's who was actually getting getting into the guys helmet and feeling around. It was stupid and just horrible how dirty some people play.

To all those saying it's ok, it happens all the time, the question is not how frequent this happens but where it stands on moral grounds.
I don't play football and my school doesn't have a football team but I do know for sure that eye gouging in any sport, whether it happens often or not, is dirty. I think a full game suspension is deserving for this kind of immaturity but also, the mental punishment of having people talk about you and call you a goon behind your back will have an impact on him as well.

They should suspend him for the entire season just like LeGarrette Blount from Oregon.

ya they have now suspended him for a whole game... BIG WHOOP
he purposely gouged a players eye repeatedly, he should be punished alot worse. he could have injured the player for his life which is not a joke. Just because he plays for a top 10 school should not lower his standards, it should actually raise the because those teams are televised nationly.
All and all i think this punishment is a JOKE there have been a lot less severe things that have had bigger punishments, not to mention that the game he is sitting out is a game that they do not need him to win

if dez bryant can be suspended for the season for a completely legal meeting with deon sanders that he lied about out of panic, then spikes should be done for the year. this coming from a florida state/alabama fan.
