Someone else had posted about the FLA/GA football game, but hadn't mentioned the eye gouging incident by Brandon Spikes - a CAPTAIN of the team! I just saw the video clip, and it disgusted me, but what really made me want to puke is Coach Urban Meyer's response - a half-game suspension against Vanderbilt. Way to send a message that you won't tolerate unsportsmanlike play with an very intentional intent to injure.
I used to think Urban was a pretty good coach, but he has lost my respect with this. What a punk.
It makes me glad that I'm associated with the sport of lacrosse. I know the guys aren't all angels, but rarely if ever have I seen this kind of low-class play on the field, and if it is seen it is punished appropriately.
The Florida athletic director and school president should step in and do the right thing her, but I have a strong feeling they won't. Cowards.

Not only that, but the message is, "We'll suspend him for eye-gouging for half game against a team we're sure to beat, but if we were playing Alabama next week you can be assured we wouldn't suspend him at all."

I don't see why this couldn't be posted in the other thread? You were sharing your opinion on the same topic they were discussing.

only Half a game suspension for Poking some one in the eyes after the tackle was made? He should have been suspended for the rest of the year, for someone who is supposed to setting an example to kids that is just unacceptable

Interesting response from the Georgia player:

Quote:
A most unlikely person came to the defense of Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes, who was suspended for half a game for apparently trying to gouge the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey

Ealey said Tuesday he doesn’t believe Spikes should have been suspended.

Not trying to hi-jack this thread, but if I am please disregard this post.

But if this type of thing happened in a lacrosse game, or a player tried to put their hands on another players helmet, what would the consequences be? Would it be considered playing with the free hand? Warding? What penalties would come from it?

Out for atleast 6 months due to torn ACL and damaged meniscus. Goodbye fall and spring seasons.

I can't think of an instance where something like that would occur other than an all out brawl, in which case that would be the least of your worries, penalty wise.

I know of no lacrosse-related reason an opponent would take his hands off his stick and go for the face or helmet. Akin to fighting for me, U R gone. You will also be out one additional game due to the ejection and the athletic director will not be your friend for the rest of the season.

I agree.

How is this thread different to the thread in the OF?

I would say at the VERY least you would be thrown out of the game and further action would take place against you.

There's not a thousand pre-pubescent kids spouting nonsense on this one?

As far as the eye gouging situation, Coach Meyer showed long ago that his only concern is winning. He doesn't care about character, integrity, or life lessons. This is the epitome of a bad coach and I feel bad for the young men who have played, play, and will play for him.

Why is the NCAA quiet on this topic? Why has the player not been suspended by the league. The school is only one part of the equation.

Because the NCAA is in love with schools like Florida and USC.
